With warmer weather, it’s time for projects such as staining or re-staining the wood in your house. If this is on your to-do list, keep in mind that many oil-based wood stains emit toxic levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are known to harm the environment and, potentially, people’s health.
An alternative to these compounds is low-VOC wood stains. One such product is ZAR Ultra Max Wood Stain (www.ugl.com). Manufactured by United Gilsonite Laboratories (UGL), it’s a waterborne, oil-modified polyurethane wood stain. The low-odor formula contains fewer than 250 grams of VOCs per liter.
The product meets the nation’s strictest VOC regulations without sacrificing long-term performance or speed of use, according to Green Building Product News, a green-focused, independent magazine for building supply retailers and distributors.
Ultra Max Wood Stain provides the deep tones of an oil-based stain and the fast drying and easy clean-up of a water-based stain.
“This product does give the look of oil, not a milk-white finish like a water-based polyurethane,” says UGL spokesperson Michelle Margotta Neary.
The easily applied stain is ideal for wood on interior surfaces such as cabinets, floors, paneling, antiques, doors, trim, and unfinished furniture. It doesn’t raise the wood grain or require a sanding sealer.
It’s available in six wood tones—Brazilian Cherry, Cayenne Pepper, Espresso, Ebony, Jamaican Rum, and Wheat—and a tint base, in quart and gallon sizes. Find it at local paint stores and Home Depot.
