Plastic Shower Curtains and Liners
The next time you replace a plastic shower curtain or liner, perhaps with a natural fabric one (see this month’s “Tit for Tat” column on the topic), consider re-using the old one in other ways.
As, over time, curtains and liners tend to collect mildew, wash it first in the washing machine, with warm water, a little detergent, bleach, and a few towels for friction. Air dry (don’t put these items in the dryer).
Vinyl shower curtains and liners make handy tablecloths or drop cloths for messy projects, such as painting, and installing or removing drywall. Use them to protect the carpeting, say under the pet’s food bowl or when changing water in a fish tank. Use them as a ground cloth under cars when doing repairs or under a blanket when having a picnic. Use them as tarps for covering everything from shed windows to barbecue pits or grills.
Use them to collect cuttings when pruning and trimming plants, or to transport mature plants during transplanting. Cut a curtain or liner in strips, and use them to tie plants. Protect your truck bed by lining it with a curtain or liner when hauling items. Use one as a small pond liner.
In a pinch, use an old shower curtain or liner as an emergency poncho or even as a makeshift whiteboard (erasable whiteboard markers wash off).
