Design Indoors: Going Cottage |
|
This week, interior designer and co-owner of Lucky Star, www.luckystar.com in Reno, Missy Allison, interior designer, gave us this wonderful inspiration for adding a little cottage comfort to your home.
The cottage look is so spring and summer! Luckily, our area has many charming home spaces that are conducive to cottage style. And, even if you call a large, contemporary space home, there are many ways to create a cottage feeling.
The term cottage denotes a small, cozy dwelling; it’s often used in reference to summer residences. Even if it’s your all-year residence that your applying the style to, ushering in a bit of bright coziness can be good for the soul as the weather turns warmer.
The small areas of any home—nooks, bathrooms, laundry rooms, guest bedrooms, or outside spaces like a screened porch or potting shed—are the perfect paired-down places to bring in some comfy, homey cottage simplicity. Little touches can really bring out the down-home feel associated with cottage.
One idea: work vintage or vintage-looking linens into your décor, either conventionally or non-conventionally. One clever use is shown in the photograph: vintage kitchen towels were strung together and clamped to a line with clothespins; this window treatment would be darling just about anywhere.
Other cottage touches can be simple such as arranging some posies in a vintage ceramic planter. Vintage florist’s planters are available in so many shapes and colors, they can also be used in many unconventional ways: at the kitchen sink as a holder for sponges and bottle brush, in the powder room for toothpaste and toothbrushes, on a vanity for cosmetic brushes.
Get creative! cottage is less about the place and more about the feeling. It’s comfortable, and comfortable is easy, like summertime!

This weekend, it’s going to be HOT! Get out the mister and mist your plants. Just like you, your plants aren’t quite ready for these over-90-degree temps! Misting not only provides some additional moisture to you flora, it cools the surrounding temperature.

Recipe of Week: Ribbon Cabbage Salad |
|
This week’s recipe comes from Hannah Hind, personal chef-for-hire and Nevada Home’s “Chef’s Secrets” columnist.
Ribbon Cabbage Salad
Dressing
6 tablespoons sugar
6 tablespoons rice vinegar
¾ cup vegetable oil
Salad
½ cup sliced almonds
½ cup sesame seeds, toasted
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon pepper
1 head cabbage chopped
8 green onions sliced
2 packages ramen noodles broken and crumbled
Dressing: put all dressing ingredients in jar and shake well!
Salad: Place chopped cabbage and green onion in bag over night so the flavors commingle. The day you will serve the salad, place the cabbage mix in a big bowl. Toast sesame seeds over medium heat in skillet until just golden. Let cool. Toast sliced almonds in same skillet over medium heat until golden. Let cool. Sprinkle ¾ of the ramen noodles, almonds, sesame seeds, and salt and pepper over cabbage, setting ¼ to the side. Pour dressing over salad and toss to combine. Top the dressed salad with the rest of the almonds, seeds, and ramen for presentation.
This salad is great served with grilled chicken or fish!
