This year I have been having a difficult time putting together a gift list that seems appropriate to the times. But after some careful thought, I have come up with some suggestions that will be easy on the budget, good for us, and appreciated long after the holidays.
Rockabye at Plumgate Haba Natural Building Blocks: Create architectural icons such as a Russian church or a medieval castle from blocks made of sustainable wood with non-toxic finishes. These are so cool I want one for my design studio!
Personal training Telling someone you want them to be around for a long time is one of the best gifts you could give. How ‘bout a gift certificate for a personal trainer? I did this for my father last year, and it could possibly be the best gift I have ever given. He loved it so much he continued with the trainer long after the time period was over. I used Elite Training L.L.C.; Billy Lynch; 775-338-3166, but most health clubs in town can provide gift certificates for personal training.
Family Gifts Time with family is a gift in itself, but with some new and different activity it takes it to a whole new level. Here are a few suggestions for family or a close group of friends. ✣ Squaw Valley Dog Sledding Tours: 503-583-6300.
✣ Nevada Adventure/ATV Tours: Group ATV tours of the Pine Nut Mountain Range. 775-588-2997. ✣ Tahoe White Water Tours: Family rafting and kayak tours. 800-442-7238.
Garden Shop Nursery Small affordable luxuries seem to be at the top of my list this year. The recently relocated and wonderfully appointed Garden Shop has really hit the mark with this. Check out their gift shop for dozens of ideas. One of my favorites is a line of “Dirt Candles.” With fragrance names like “Peace of Mind” and “Fresh Start,” these long-burning candles (60+ hours) are sure to be enjoyed well into spring!
Great Basin Food Co-Op 542½ Plumas St., Reno. Consider giving a membership to the Great Basin Food Co-op—only $15 per year! You’ll be supporting local farmers as well as giving someone access to some of the best organic and sustainable products around. The $15 fee gives you access to the entire store plus a 10% discount on your purchases.
Spa treatments /massages This luxury is one of the first to be cut from the personal budget, which makes a gift certificate for a treatment seem extra special. Try ✣ L’essence on W. Liberty in Reno. My favorite package is the “Stress Buster,” a 4 ½ hour facial, massage, manicure, pedicure miracle! ✣ Tangerine at the Summit Mall has a great package for the guys. The “Warrior Retreat” is two hours of renewal including a massage, facial and scalp treatment. For a bargain massage, try ✣ Ahhhhhh Massage,
✣ Massage Envy, ✣ Ralston School of Massage, or ✣ The Milan Institute.
