During this holiday season show you care by giving thoughtfully, simply and responsibly. Thinking “green” during the holidays is important as we create a lot of extra waste during our celebration and merriment. The motto is: spend less, create more, and live greener. In terms of shopping, reduce spending and reduce waste by reusing and recycling that which already exists. Of course re-gifting is a good way to minimize spending while reusing and recycling. A planter not being used and a lovely amaryllis plant, or cactus and succulents, is just one idea. Shopping your own home and storage for seasonal décor that can be repurposed and gifted is a creative way to share something personal with someone else. Utilizing that which already exists applies to vintage items as well. Antiques are the epitome of recycled goods. Shopping vintage is a wonderful way to give something unique, something that was crafted with quality parts and pieces, something that was built to last, and has. Vintage goods are a wonderful alternative to mass-produced goods. Most mass-produced goods are coming in from beyond our own borders anyhow, and that hasn’t been good for our country, or for our planet. Keeping it local is always a good policy—local meaning American, or local meaning within the city limits. Every dollar spent here is works for us. Being mindful of spending at the holidays is second nature, being mindful of what you are buying is important. Think in terms of reduce, reuse, and recycling when buying and giving, all year round. n Missy Allison is a local Interior Designer & co-owner of www.luckystargallery.com.
