Mulch. Summer is ending, it’s time to freshen up your mulched areas. Keep moisture in the soil and keep up on the weeds.

Stop deadheading. Especially roses.

Clean out your gutters before fall leaves start to clog them. Remember to frequently clean during the fall.

Reduce watering. Change your routine and quit watering in the early morning.

Check
irrigation systems, especially drip systems, to make sure they are functioning properly.

Change
your closet. Bring out the light sweaters according to temperature changes. Be ready to slip on any fall clothes when the weather declines.

Plant perennials. Now’s the best time for peonies and poppies.

Check your furnace. Make sure your heating system is ready for the colder months ahead. Do it yourself or call a professional.

Harvest the last of your veggies—peppers, tomatoes, and zucchini. Leave your root crops in the ground for awhile but harvest herb leaves, seeds and any fruit that has ripened.

Put away summer. Fall begins September 22. Change the screen doors and start closing the windows.

Volunteer for your favorite nonprofit. Even a couple of hours can help.

Plant garlic. Although we’re just ending summer, it’s the perfect time to plant garlic.

Get back into a regular routine. The kids are back in school….get study time, chores and other activites back on schedule.
