Going Green
May 2008

Ask ten people what living green means, and you’re likely to get ten different answers. It’s conserving water and using renewable energy sources. Yes, and there’s recycling and buying local foods. Composting and bringing your own bags to the grocery store count, too. Each of these actions is part of an earth-friendly lifestyle.

Econet tip of the month: The West Street Market
Environmental education, great food, art, regular farmer’s markets twenty weeks a year, flower venders, and more will be coming to the middle of downtown Reno this summer. Located on West Street between First and Second Streets, the West Street Market is slated to open its outdoor open-air courtyard with vendors in July, and will expand to feature fifteen permanent indoor food vendors which will open this fall and serve lunch, dinner, or take-out. Three times a week, local farmers, businesses, artists, and organizations will be invited to set up booths.

Chef's Secrets: Stone House Cafe
May 2008

Image

I sit in the warmth of a baywindow, sunlight dancing in, and talk to the father of Stone House Café, Paul Abowd. The comfort of the old house turned café is as intoxicating as the meals served next to me. His large brown eyes twinkle as he re-caps sixty years of culinary adventure. San Francisco coffee shops and nightclub dining in Oakland are a few of the many restaurant endeavors brought to life by Paul and his late wife, Adele; also among them, located in Carson City, is her namesake restaurant, Adele’s, now owned by their son, Charlie Abowd, another talented restaurateur.
